Description
Working the Night Watch on Ward Seven:
I was working the night shift as an intern at the Charles Perrault Institution
for the Criminally Insane. My boss, Doctor Huntsmann, was treating a schizophrenic
young woman they called Little Red Riding Hood because she had eviserated her
grandmother. They kept her isolated in Ward Seven.
Making my rounds at the hospital was usually rather dull and routine and not very
demanding because of the late hour. But this night seemed different, there was an air of
restlessness within the patient population. Some attributed it to the lunar eclipse
or 'Blood Moon' that was taking place that night. i know, that doesn't sound very medical
or professional in a hospital setting, the moon and it effects on lunacy, but that topic was
very prevalent among the staff that evening.
I was starring out the window at the full moon when the quiet of the night was shattered
by a mournful howl that reverberated through the halls. The first ten or so cries sounded
rather normal in a house of madness, but it was the last twenty or more that change my
annoyance to one of curiosity and concern. Something about the sound had changed,
it was no longer the vocalization of a mentally ill person, but more like that of a wounded
and distressed animal. Suddenly it sounded so real i ran down the hall from my post and
entered Ward Seven. There it was, the wolf bathed in full moonlight, strapped to the bed
howling painfully.
I don't know what compelled me, but I was overcome with empathy for the beast,
and with trepidation I unlatched and swung open the barred window. I looked back at the wolf
who was now pleading with sad eyes, pleading to be unbound and set free. I did, and that's
when the she bit me and leapt through the window disappearing into the night .
I don't how many years ago that was, but here I am now on the full moon night,
strapped to the bed howling like a lone wolf wanting to be set free.
